Rescue Dog Surprises Shelter with Record-Breaking Litter of 14 Puppies

A routine veterinary visit turned into a record-breaking event at the RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire branch when a rescued five-year-old Cane Corso named Kila gave birth to an astonishing litter of 14 puppies.

Kila arrived at the shelter on July 1. She was scheduled for a standard spay operation, but a veterinary examination revealed she was pregnant. What veterinarians did not anticipate was the sheer size of the litter. Six days after the discovery, Kila delivered 14 healthy puppies, marking the largest litter ever born at this specific RSPCA facility.

The arrival of Kila's massive brood has added to the already busy workload at the shelter. Another dog, a four-year-old named Susie, who was rescued from a property with 15 other dogs, had also recently given birth to a litter of 10 puppies. Consequently, the shelter is now simultaneously caring for a total of 24 puppies, including Kila's record-breaking litter.

Chloe Gee, a shelter worker, described the situation as "very hectic" but expressed pride in the "19 adorable, wriggling puppies" currently under their care, noting their increasing playfulness. Both Kila and Susie are reportedly being excellent mothers to their large litters, bringing a heartwarming, albeit challenging, situation to the dedicated staff.
