Rescuers in Nepal pull two people alive from flood debris 10 days after disaster

Ten days after devastating floods tore through Nepal, rescuers pulled two people alive from separate sites as the search continued for thousands still missing.

A Chinese man emerged from a hydropower tunnel, according to a social media post from the prime minister’s office. His rescue brought to three the number of workers pulled alive from the Trishuli hydropower project. Two Nepalese workers were rescued on Friday.

Nepal’s army said a joint team of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts reached the man inside a 225-meter tunnel, roughly 740 feet long. He was undergoing a health assessment after rescuers evacuated him by helicopter. Images showed an army medic checking him during the flight, while a photo released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed two rescuers carrying him out of the tunnel.

Rescue teams have increasingly turned their attention to 12 hydropower projects across Nepal. About 900 workers are missing from those sites, according to the report. The continued discovery of survivors has offered moments of relief amid a search shaped by the floods’ enormous human toll.
