Research Centre for Eastern Europe: University of Bremen sees attempt at intimidation by Russian justice

Russia's justice system has declared the Research Centre for Eastern Europe at the University of Bremen an "undesirable organization," a move that the center's director, Professor Dr. Susanne Schattenberg, decried as "double sanctioning."

The designation, announced by the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, effectively prohibits the center's activities within Russia and penalizes any Russian citizens who cooperate with it. This action is part of a broader pattern of Russian authorities targeting independent research and civil society organizations.

Schattenberg stated that the center, which focuses on the political, economic, and social developments in Eastern Europe, has always operated with academic integrity and transparency. She expressed concern that the "undesirable organization" label is being used to suppress critical research and stifle academic exchange.

The decision by Russian authorities is seen as an attempt to intimidate and silence critical voices, particularly those that analyze and report on Russia's internal affairs and foreign policy. The University of Bremen has pledged its continued support for the Research Centre for Eastern Europe.
