Residents protest luxury island's waste facility near Auckland reserve

Residents near Auckland's Sandspit Reserve are expressing strong opposition to the temporary waste enclosure established at the reserve, which serves Kawau Island. They feel the area has become a dumping ground for the luxury island's homeowners and holidaymakers.

Greg Doherty, representing the Sandspit Residents and Ratepayers Association, presented the concerns to the Auckland Council's Policy, Planning and Development Committee. He urged the committee to explore alternative methods for managing the waste generated by Kawau Island residents and visitors.

The association's stance highlights a conflict between the needs of a popular recreational area and the waste disposal requirements of a nearby affluent community. The residents are seeking a resolution that does not involve their local reserve being utilized as a waste facility.
