Resilient Tayal Youth Overcomes Hardship to Win Presidential Education Award

Lin Han, a graduating student from Luodong Commercial High School in Yilan, Taiwan, has been recognized with the Presidential Education Award. Hailing from the Tayal indigenous community, his journey has been marked by profound adversity, including his father's death, his mother's battle with cancer, and the care of his grandmother who suffers from a rare disease. Despite these challenges, Lin Han has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination.

He not only became the youngest recipient of the Tayal language proficiency certification nationwide but also earned the prestigious Presidential Education Award. Lin Han shared that the trials he faced in his upbringing have served as motivation for self-improvement. He has been accepted into the National Chengchi University's Department of Ethnology through a special admissions channel.

The challenges I encountered during my growth have been the nourishment for my self-improvement.

Upon completing his university studies, Lin Han aspires to become a Tayal language teacher. He hopes to teach in schools and dedicate his efforts to the preservation and transmission of his indigenous mother tongue. His alma mater, Luodong Commercial High School, highlighted his strength in shouldering the responsibility of caring for his grandmother while continuing to pursue his education and cultural advocacy, viewing him as an exemplary role model.
