Resistant Gonorrhea Spreads in Sweden: 'Alarming'

Sweden is facing a concerning increase in gonorrhea cases that are resistant to antibiotic treatments, a trend described as "alarming" by health officials. More significantly, a growing number of these infections are being contracted within Sweden itself, indicating the establishment of local transmission chains.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has highlighted Sweden as a country where the rise of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea is particularly worrying. Historically, Sweden has seen only isolated cases, often contracted abroad. However, recent data shows a notable uptick, with nine cases of resistant gonorrhea reported last year and four already this year, a significant jump from the previous maximum of three cases annually.

Historically, we have only had isolated cases here, and usually, one was infected in other countries. Now we are seeing significantly more resistant bacteria.

Microbiologist Thomas Åkerlund from the Public Health Agency of Sweden explained that the resistant strains primarily show resistance to ceftriaxone, the current first-line treatment, and also exhibit some resistance to azithromycin. This development raises the possibility of more treatment failures, where patients do not clear the infection. While alternative treatments exist, including an upcoming new antibiotic not yet approved in the EU, the agency is currently monitoring the situation without implementing new specific measures.
