Øresund Aquarium Reports High Interest in Seeing Tuna in Danish Waters

Interest in observing tuna in Danish waters is surging, according to the Øresund Aquarium. Since 2015, observations of tuna in the Øresund strait, Kattegat, and Skagerrak have steadily increased year by year. This growing phenomenon has translated into a massive demand for tuna safaris. Jens Peder Jeppesen, the aquarium's director, told Ritzau that while he conducted only four tuna safari trips in 2017, the upcoming season boasts approximately 320 tours. "All our tours have been almost completely sold out for the past month. So it's absolutely wild," Jeppesen stated, highlighting the immense popularity. These safaris, departing from Helsingør, allow tourists to witness the bluefin tuna feeding on fish like garfish, herring, or mackerel. Tuna were once abundant in the Øresund in the 1950s but disappeared due to overfishing. The Øresund Aquarium pioneered these safaris in the region, and now several other tour boats offer similar experiences, catering to the public's desire to see these magnificent marine animals in their natural habitat.
