Retired Japanese man finds retirement isolating, returns to work as security guard

Retirement did not bring the expected peace for a 69-year-old Japanese man, identified as Mr. Okayama. After leaving his job at a transportation company, he anticipated a leisurely life. However, within six months, the lack of daily purpose and profound loneliness led him to talk to himself in front of the television.

Mr. Okayama, who had previously worked for 22 years in a securities firm before being laid off during the 1997 financial crisis, found his social circle dwindling after retirement. Seeking to reconnect with society and escape the pressure of "every day being Sunday," he found a part-time job as a security guard in an office building at age 66. He now works three hours daily, earning 1,200 yen per hour, which amounts to about 72,000 yen per month. This income, combined with his wife's earnings, allows them to save for future medical and care expenses, demonstrating a continued focus on financial prudence.
