Revenue board, police partner against illegal tax collections

The Joint Revenue Board, under the leadership of Executive Secretary Mr. Segun Adesokan, has taken a decisive step in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force to tackle the pervasive issue of illegal tax collection and the disruptive roadblocks that plague our transport corridors. This partnership is a critical component of the broader tax reforms championed by President Bola Tinubu, which aim to foster an environment where prosperity and profits are taxed, rather than burdening citizens and businesses with levies on poverty and investments.

The JRB's mandate for uniformity, transparency, and efficiency in revenue administration is being reinforced through decisive actions. The Board's December communiqué, which banned unauthorized roadblocks and cash-based tax collection, is now being backed by the formidable power of the Nigerian Police Force. The newly passed Model Harmonised Taxes and Levies Act, criminalizing these illicit practices, further solidifies this stance, ensuring that those who engage in illegal revenue collection face prosecution.

These unlawful practices not only harass citizens but significantly increase the cost of goods and services, as transporters are forced to pass on illegal charges to consumers.

The Force acknowledged the economic and security implications of illegal roadblocks and assured that Commissioners of Police across all states would collaborate fully with the Board and the Chairmen of Sub-National Tax Authorities in the 36 states and the FCT to eliminate this menace.
