Reward offered for information about murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland

A fresh appeal for information has been launched with a £20,000 reward offered in the ongoing investigation into the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland.

My thoughts remain, above all else, with Lyra’s loving family and friends.

The 29-year-old journalist died on April 18, 2019, after being struck by a bullet while observing disturbances in the Creggan area of Derry. Despite a recent trial, three men who faced a joint enterprise murder charge were found not guilty earlier this year, and no one has been charged with firing the fatal shot.

Following the trial, McKee's sister, Nichola Corner, called for an end to the "culture of silence" in Northern Ireland, where individuals with crucial information are reluctant to come forward. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) issued a renewed appeal, supported by the independent charity Crimestoppers, which is offering the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the responsible parties.

Her murder robbed them of a much-loved daughter, sister, partner, friend and colleague, and they have had to live with the pain of that loss every day since.

Detective Chief Inspector Hazel Miller emphasized the pain the McKee family has endured, stating, "No family should have to endure this ongoing torment. They deserve answers. They deserve to see those responsible held accountable." The appeal specifically seeks information about the gunman involved in the "senseless killing."

Miller directly addressed those who may possess information but feel unable, reluctant, or frightened to come forward. "I am appealing directly to you, please take this opportunity to do the right thing," she urged. "Your information, however small or unimportant it may seem, could be the missing piece that helps us deliver justice for Lyra and her family." The PSNI stressed that circumstances change and information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers or directly to the police.
