Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland face severe weather warnings with thunderstorms and heavy rain

Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are preparing for a turbulent weekend as the German Weather Service (DWD) issues warnings for thunderstorms and severe weather.

Thursday is expected to start with summer-like heat, reaching highs of 26 degrees Celsius in the mountains and up to 33 degrees Celsius in the Vorderpfalz region. While the day will begin with clear to partly cloudy skies, showers and isolated thunderstorms, potentially bringing hail and heavy rain, are forecast to develop from the late afternoon.

The situation is expected to worsen overnight into Friday. Further thunderstorm complexes are predicted to move through the northern parts of the regions, with isolated severe weather events possible due to intense heavy rainfall and hail. Locally, hurricane-force gusts could occur.

Friday will see a continuation of unsettled weather, with alternating cloudy skies and highs between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Rain is expected again in the afternoon, with thunderstorms and the risk of severe weather from heavy rainfall not being ruled out. Saturday is forecast to be similarly changeable, with intermittent rain in the afternoon and temperatures remaining between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.
