Rhineland-Palatinate CDU Cancels Meeting with Chancellor Scholz Over Minister Schnieder Handling

The CDU parliamentary group in Rhineland-Palatinate has canceled a scheduled visit to the Chancellery in Berlin, citing the recent handling of Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder as the reason. In a letter to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Christoph Gensch, chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, stated that the decision was made after internal consultations. Gensch expressed that the group had loyally supported the federal government during challenging times, but the way Schnieder was treated caused significant misunderstanding. He described Schnieder as a figure of high professional competence, integrity, and reliability, making the recent treatment difficult to comprehend. "A personal exchange between the CDU parliamentary group of Rhineland-Palatinate and you requires, in our view, a minimum of mutual trust and appreciation, which is unfortunately not present in the current situation," Gensch wrote, directly criticizing the Chancellor. The visit was arranged in preparation for the group's upcoming retreat. The letter implies that the departure of Schnieder, who had announced he would request dismissal from Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the subsequent withdrawal of his designated successor, Fritz Güntzler, created an untenable situation for the meeting. Criticism of Scholz's handling of the Schnieder affair has been growing within the CDU. Former Chancellery Chief Peter Altmaier voiced his dismay and anger on X, stating the treatment of Schnieder was neither fair to the person nor his performance. Schnieder's brother, Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister-President Gordon Schnieder, shared Altmaier's post, signaling support for this stance.
