Richard Carapaz targets a Vuelta podium from fifth place

Richard Carapaz began Stage 10 of the 2026 Vuelta a España still close enough to the front to dream of the podium. The Ecuadorian started the 184.7-kilometer ride from Alcaraz to Elche de la Sierra in fifth place overall, 3 minutes and 26 seconds behind race leader Enric Mas.

Carapaz moved up one position after finishing ninth in Stage 9. With two weeks remaining before the race winners are decided, his place in the general classification keeps him among the riders fighting for the top positions.

The stage offered a demanding route, with 2,991 meters of accumulated climbing and three third-category passes. That terrain could encourage attacks from riders seeking a breakaway, while the leading contenders would need to remain alert in the main group.

Carapaz entered the day determined to keep advancing. During the rest day, he highlighted his combative spirit and his intention to seize opportunities as they emerged. He is the only Ecuadorian rider in the 2026 Vuelta and still has several stages in which to reduce the gap to those ahead of him.

The competition is scheduled to finish on Sept. 13, leaving the general classification open as the race continues.
