Ricky Martin: “My refuge is telling stories”

“My refuge is telling stories,” Ricky Martin said, describing the role art plays across his work in music, film, theater and literature.

The Puerto Rican singer and actor said he wants to keep searching for stories, creating them and taking ownership of stories created by others. He spoke in an interview with EFE during his participation in the Venice Film Festival, where he appears outside competition in Gael García Bernal’s film “Hombre al agua.”

My refuge is telling stories. My refuge is being able to find that vulnerability to convince the audience of what I have experienced or what I have seen that affected me, and to create a conversation.

Martin, 54, said he has expressed himself through his music and through scripts that have moved him. He described vulnerability as a way to persuade audiences of what he has experienced or witnessed, and to create a conversation around it.

“That is where my story lies: continuing to do whatever I can in front of cameras, with music, in theater or in literature, in the books I have written,” he said. “I just want to keep searching for stories and creating them.”
