Right-Wing Surge Among Young Voters Wanes in Sweden

The tide of right-wing sentiment among young voters in Sweden appears to be receding, according to recent surveys. While previous reports indicated a growing conservative lean, particularly among young men, the latest DN/Ipsos polls suggest a reversal, with opposition parties now leading among the 18-29 age group. This shift indicates that if young voters had the deciding vote, the opposition would have won the election.

Several factors are cited for this change in opinion. Political scientist Jakob Ahlbom points to a recalibration of the political agenda. Issues such as 'teen deportations' and climate change have gained prominence, potentially overshadowing earlier government focuses on crime, immigration, and energy. Furthermore, the positioning of the governing 'Tidö parties,' especially their openness to forming a government with the Sweden Democrats, may be alienating centrist young voters.

A significant gender divide in political preferences is also evident. While young women overwhelmingly support the opposition, young men continue to favor the Tidö parties. Ahlbom suggests that major societal changes like the 2015 refugee crisis, rising crime rates, the MeToo movement, and the energy crisis may have led to divergent conclusions among men and women. The increasing influence of social media, which often presents different political content to men and women, could also be a contributing factor.

Young voters are not as unique or trend-sensitive as some might believe, according to Ahlbom. Their voting patterns increasingly mirror those of older demographics, with opposition parties also leading among voters aged 65 and above. This suggests a broader realignment in the electorate, with the governing parties facing challenges in appealing to a wide range of age groups. The coming months will reveal if the Tidö parties can shift back towards the center to regain support.
