Rise in egg price

Egg prices in Chitwan, Nepal, are on the rise, climbing by Rs 50 per crate for large, medium, and small eggs. This increase, effective immediately, brings the price of large eggs to Rs 500, medium to Rs 470, and small to Rs 415 per 30-egg crate. The surge is attributed to a combination of decreased production following bird flu outbreaks and a subsequent increase in consumer demand.

Prices have started to rise as the demand for eggs has increased.

Binod Pokharel, central president of the Nepal Layers Poultry Association, explained that daily egg production has significantly dropped to approximately 2.8 million eggs, down from a previous average of 4.5 million, largely due to the impact of bird flu. This reduction in supply, coupled with rising demand, has driven the price up.

Despite the recent price hike, many farmers are still struggling to recoup their expenses. Pokharel noted that the cost price for a crate of eggs is around Rs 573.60, meaning each egg costs approximately Rs 19.12 to produce. Farmers are hoping that the current price increase will eventually allow them to reach this cost price. They have suffered substantial losses due to bird flu and are appealing to the government for relief measures.
