River Plate secures World Cup winner Ángel Correa on permanent deal

River Plate has bolstered its squad with the high-profile signing of Argentine forward Ángel Correa, who will play for the club until December 2029. The Buenos Aires giants secured a definitive transfer for the World Cup champion from Mexican club Tigres UANL. Correa is set to undergo his medical examination in the coming hours before finalizing his contract.

The transfer, which spanned several weeks with various negotiations between the clubs, reportedly cost around $15 million for the 31-year-old striker. Correa had already agreed to personal terms with River Plate during his vacation in Madrid and traveled to Argentina to complete the medical and formalize his move. This signing comes just before the start of the local tournament.

Correa's return to Argentine football follows an extensive career in Europe and his recent spell with Tigres UANL, where he arrived in July 2025 from Atlético Madrid. In Mexico, he played 54 games, scored 23 goals, and established himself as a key player. Tigres coach Guido Pizarro had previously acknowledged River Plate's offer, noting Correa's significance to his team and the magnitude of the club pursuing him.

A World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022 and a Copa América champion in 2021, Correa also left a significant mark at San Lorenzo, winning the Torneo Inicial 2013 and Copa Libertadores 2014 before moving to Europe. His arrival at River Plate adds another World Cup winner to a roster that also includes defender Nicolás Otamendi and Uruguayan midfielders Mauro Arambarri and Giovanni González, alongside the returns of Lucas Beltrán and Rafael Santos Borré.
