Road crash kills two brothers in Ondo

The streets of Akure, Ondo State, became the scene of a tragic incident on Wednesday, as a devastating road accident claimed the lives of two brothers. The collision, involving a truck, a car, and a motorcycle, occurred near the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), a location that has drawn scrutiny following the event.

I came to deliver goods to my boss, but the shop was yet to open, so I parked my vehicle. As I was moving towards the boot to bring down the goods in front of the shop, I suddenly heard people shouting. When I looked back, I saw the tipper clearing vehicles and motorcycles. I immediately ran for my life. You can see how badly my vehicle was damaged. The tipper crushed the two men on the motorcycle instantly.

Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of the moments leading up to the tragedy. A commercial driver, who narrowly escaped the carnage, described the speeding truck as a runaway force, crushing vehicles and motorcycles indiscriminately. The two brothers, riding on a motorcycle, were killed instantly, their lives cut short in a horrific instant.

The presence of VIO officials at the scene, reportedly conducting routine checks, added a layer of tension. Angry residents, distraught by the loss of life, initially directed their anger towards the VIO officers. However, swift intervention by the police prevented the situation from escalating into further chaos, restoring order to the scene.

The accident occurred as a result of brake failure, four persons were involved, while two were killed.

Authorities, including the Federal Road Safety Corps and the state police command, have confirmed the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest brake failure on the part of the truck as a likely cause. The Ondo Sector Commander, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, stated that four persons were involved, with two fatalities. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that the victims were rushed to the hospital where they were declared dead. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the persistent dangers on our roads and the critical need for stringent enforcement of traffic safety regulations.

The motorcycle rider and his yet-to-be-identified passenger were immediately rushed to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure, where they were both confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty.
