Road rehabilitation works to begin in Ocho Rios this weekend

Road rehabilitation works will begin in Ocho Rios at 8 p.m. Saturday, with motorists and pedestrians warned to expect intermittent traffic changes for the next 10 days.

The National Works Agency said crews will periodically reduce Main Street to a single lane while they remove the existing asphalt through a milling process. The first phase will target about 700 metres of roadway between Island Village and the intersection with Milford Road.

Work will also cover roughly 300 metres between the entrance to the Moon Palace Hotel and the Ocho Rios Market. At Fisherman’s Beach, workers will remove failed sections of the road embankment, rebuild them with suitable road materials and repave the area.

The project includes repairs to sidewalks along the North Coast Highway between Evelyn Street and Bucksfield. Once the paving is complete, crews will add road markings and raised pavement markers, commonly called “cat’s eyes”, to improve visibility and safety. Some activities will take place at night, while other sections will operate under single-lane traffic arrangements. After the township works finish, patching will begin along the North Coast Highway between White River and Milford Road. The NWA urged the public to follow warning signs and instructions from flag people during the more than $50-million project.
