Rodent infestation rises in Gaza border communities, hundreds of traps set out

Communities near the Gaza Strip are grappling with a significant increase in rat and mouse infestations, prompting sanitation officials to distribute hundreds of traps. The measures, however, appear insufficient as residents report disturbing encounters with the rodents.

Motke Hai, a maintenance worker at a kibbutz near the border, described the grim reality of removing traps "packed with these rodents." He called the situation "simply terrible." Residents have found droppings near children's beds, and some injured individuals have required hospitalization for treatment related to the infestation.

Officials are considering several factors contributing to the surge in the rodent population. One theory suggests that an unusually rainy winter forced the rodents from their burrows. Another points to extensive excavation work occurring within the Gaza Strip, which may have displaced the pests. Similar rodent population growth has been observed in Israel during past excavation projects, such as those for light rail systems in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

The border barriers offer little impediment to these small pests, allowing them to spread from fields into communities where they can reproduce largely undisturbed. Both families and sanitation workers note that the current rate of infestation has not been seen in decades. The Eshkol Regional Council acknowledged the problem and stated that measures are being taken, though the Health Ministry has deferred responsibility to the Environmental Protection Ministry.
