Roman Festival in Tongeren expands due to success: 'Gladiator fights on the Grote Markt'

Tongeren is set to host an expanded Roman Festival on August 29 and 30, building on the significant success of its inaugural event last year. The festival, which drew 10,000 visitors in its first year, is increasing its footprint within the city center to accommodate growing popularity.

The main attraction, gladiator fights, will move from Vrijthof to the Grote Markt, situated in front of the historic city hall. More seating and standing room will be provided for spectators, including those with mobility challenges. This relocation frees up space at Vrijthof and Museumplein for other Roman-themed demonstrations and workshops.

New this year is the demonstration of textile dyeing by an experimental archaeologist. Also, body and beauty care is a new theme at the market.

This year's festival will feature over 50 specialists showcasing ancient Roman crafts, including blacksmithing, pottery, textile and leatherworking, basket weaving, and bone carving. A new addition is a textile dyeing demonstration by an experimental archaeologist, alongside a focus on Roman body and beauty care.

Visitors can also expect more in-depth exploration of the Roman army's structure and operations. The event promises a variety of activities for all interests, including music, Roman mythology, comic-style Roman portraits, workshops, and Roman cuisine. The Gallo-Roman Museum will offer free admission during the festival.

The Roman Festival was a bullseye last year. For families with children as well as for history enthusiasts who want to delve a little deeper into the past. There is something for everyone. We hope to receive at least as many visitors this year as last year.
