Romania Achieves Record Agricultural Output Amid European Drought

Romania is celebrating a historic year for its agricultural sector, achieving record production levels for wheat, barley, and rapeseed. This success stands in stark contrast to the drought conditions that have impacted much of Europe this summer.

Cezar Gheorghe, an agricultural expert at AGRIColumn, explained that the exceptional yields are the result of a decade of favorable conditions. "Never in its history has Romania had such volumes of wheat, barley, and rapeseed," he stated. The favorable season began in autumn 2025 with continuous, heavy rainfall, followed by a snowy winter and significant precipitation throughout the spring until early July.

This sustained moisture in the soil proved crucial. Even as high temperatures and drought set in after mid-July, crops like corn and sunflowers had already absorbed sufficient water. Gheorghe noted that Romania was largely spared the intense heatwave that affected Western Europe until around July 15-20, allowing autumn crops to mature with adequate water reserves.

While western regions like Arad, Timiș, and Bihor did experience some drought, the overall national picture is one of abundance. Farmers' strategic shift towards planting more autumn crops and adapting their methods after dry spells in 2020-2025 also contributed to this year's remarkable output. The harvest is expected to be completed in the coming days.
