Romania Assures Energy Supply After Cernavodă Nuclear Plant Unit 2 Shutdown

Romania's Unit 2 at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant will undergo a controlled shutdown starting Thursday, August 13, due to current hydrological conditions. The Ministry of Energy assured that the country's electricity demand will be fully met through alternative production sources and imports.

The national energy system possesses multiple resources to offset the lost production. These include the Rovinari 4 power unit, with an installed capacity of 330 megawatts, which is on standby. Additionally, at least 300 megawatts can be sourced from Hidroelectrica, depending on water resources and technical limitations. Wind power production is projected to average 525 megawatts over the next seven days, with a potential peak of 1,560 megawatts.

Romania can also rely on imports, possessing a cross-border capacity of approximately 4,000 megawatts. The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the situation is under constant monitoring, and measures will be adjusted based on the Danube's flow, production, and consumption. Forecasts for the weekend suggest a possible improvement in hydrological conditions.

Authorities also recommend responsible energy consumption, particularly between 7 PM and 11 PM when demand is highest.
