Romania Defense Minister Proposes 30% Bonus to Boost Military Salaries

Romania's Defense Minister, Radu Miruță, is advocating for a significant increase in military personnel's income through a proposed "operationalization bonus." This mechanism, which could amount to up to 30% of a soldier's salary, is described by Miruță as a disguised salary raise rather than a traditional, selectively distributed bonus. The initiative aims to reform the salary structure within the defense sector, making it more appealing to new recruits and helping to alleviate the existing deficit in personnel.

Miruță explained that the "operationalization bonus" is intended for all uniformed personnel in the Romanian Army, distinguishing it from other bonuses that are not universally applied. He emphasized that the mechanism is particularly designed to bolster the incomes of lower-paid soldiers, where the percentage increase would have a more substantial impact. This move comes as part of a broader effort to enhance the attractiveness and competitiveness of military careers in Romania.

Beyond salary increases, the Defense Minister also voiced criticism regarding the current distribution of certain bonuses within the system. He pointed out instances of inequity, suggesting that some individuals receive bonuses based on personal connections rather than merit or workload. Miruță stated his strong support for increased funding for defense personnel, viewing it as a crucial factor in attracting and retaining talent within the armed forces. "The idea that the Romanian Army needs more money for soldiers to encourage them to enter the field is not a bad thing, and I support it with all my might," he affirmed.

The proposed bonus system and the minister's critique of existing practices highlight a push for greater fairness and improved financial incentives within the Romanian military. By addressing both compensation and perceived inequities, the ministry hopes to strengthen the armed forces and ensure a more robust and motivated workforce.
