Romania's PSD calls for political unity after Russian drone incident

Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD) has urged all political factions to cease internal conflicts and unite for the national interest following a drone crash and subsequent explosion over a residential building in Galați. The incident, attributed to a Russian drone, prompted a strong condemnation from the PSD, which labeled the act an "unacceptable violation of Romania's sovereignty."

The party asserted that such behavior by any state demonstrates contempt for international law and the safety of NATO member citizens. In light of this, the PSD called for political parties to set aside their differences and act cohesively to urgently mitigate the security risks faced by Romanian citizens. The PSD specifically rejected claims by Ilie Bolojan and other USR representatives suggesting that the party's challenge to the SAFE legislation at the Constitutional Court had hampered Romania's ability to respond to the Galați incident.

PSD maintained that its legal challenge was aimed at clarifying legislative uncertainties within the ordinance and argued that the process would expedite a decision from the Constitutional Court. The party highlighted that the Galați incident exposed serious shortcomings in the national defense system, necessitating swift remedial actions and an end to political squabbles. They stressed the need for a functional government led by professionals in defense structures.

Furthermore, the PSD stated its commitment to supporting the rapid establishment of a responsible and effective government capable of ensuring the efficient operation of state institutions, particularly within the national security system. PSD President Sorin Grindeanu previously emphasized Romania's urgent need for an effective anti-drone defense system, stating that the Galați event unequivocally demonstrated the country's inability to defend against such targeted attacks.
