Romania Strikes Back Against Russian Drone Incursions to Protect Strategic Ports

Romania has escalated its response to Russian drone incursions, expelling a diplomat and summoning the ambassador following recent incidents. This firm reaction marks a significant shift from Bucharest's previously measured approach to the repeated violations of its airspace.

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Romania has documented 33 Russian drone incursions. Nineteen of these have occurred this year alone, primarily targeting Ukraine's grain infrastructure located in regions adjacent to Romania. The proximity of these areas, including Ukrainian Bessarabia and Moldova, places Romania in close reach of the conflict's aerial activity.

The region of the Danube Delta, a strategic area for Romania, has become increasingly exposed. Even when a drone crashed into a residential building in the city of Galati in May, injuring a mother and son, Romania's response remained relatively subdued. However, the recent surge in incursions and their proximity to sensitive infrastructure appear to have prompted a more assertive diplomatic and security posture.

These incursions highlight the vulnerability of Romania's strategic ports and its airspace. The country is now taking more direct measures to protect these assets, signaling a new phase in its engagement with the ongoing conflict and its direct consequences.
