Romanian Deputy Mayor Investigated After Allegedly Leaving Crash Scene and Trying to Cover It Up

Alexandru Ștefănescu, deputy mayor of Stejari in Romania’s Gorj County, is under criminal investigation after allegedly leaving the scene of a road crash before police arrived.

Investigators say the vehicle he was driving left the road and struck the fences of a household in the locality. When police reached the scene, the driver was no longer there. Police representatives also said the traces of the crash had been altered.

Ioana Sacagiu, a spokeswoman for the Gorj County Police Inspectorate, said another man from the same locality allegedly used a tractor to move the vehicle into the yard of a property. That action changed the location where the crash occurred, police said.

Another man from the same locality allegedly intervened and removed the vehicle from the scene with the help of a tractor, transporting it to the yard of a property, which led to the alteration of the road accident scene.

Shortly after the incident, Ștefănescu went to the emergency department of the hospital in Târgu Cărbunești. Information cited in the investigation said he told doctors that his injuries resulted from a fall rather than a road accident. He later went to police and allegedly admitted his involvement. His breath test was negative.

Asked for comment, Ștefănescu said the matter concerned his private life and that he could not discuss an ongoing criminal case. “It was an unfortunate event that concerns my private life. Everything happened during my free time. A criminal investigation file is currently being worked on,” he said. Police opened a case for negligent bodily injury and for leaving the accident scene or modifying or removing its traces.
