Romanian Furniture Factory Owner Rejects Călin Georgescu’s Planned Visit

Călin Georgescu was scheduled to visit a furniture factory in Vaslui, but the company’s administrator said he would not be allowed inside. Marcomovas owner Ion Marcu said he was shocked to learn that the factory had been included in the former presidential candidate’s tour.

The announced itinerary placed the visit between 12:30 and 13:00 on Saturday. Georgescu’s wider program in Vaslui included stops in Codăești, Lipovăț and the city of Vaslui, beginning at a market in Codăești and ending at the Folk Craftsmen’s Fair in Copou Park.

“Marcomovas employees do not agree with Georgescu’s visit to the factory and do not understand why we were included in this program. We therefore inform the organizers that the factory’s employees do not want Georgescu to visit the factory,” Marcu said in a company statement.

Local media in Vaslui reported that Marcu supports the Save Romania Union, or USR, and has a different political preference from Georgescu. The report said he also did not understand how the factory came to be listed on the itinerary.

Georgescu has recently traveled to several counties for meetings with local producers. On Aug. 29, he attended a local producers’ fair in Cisnădie, Sibiu county, where he addressed a crowd about reducing the role of intermediaries and promoting Romanian products. The previous week, he visited the market in Pâncota, Arad county, and met businessman and major western Romanian farmer Dimitrie Muscă in Curtici.
