Romanian Liberal Party Faces Internal Tensions as Veștea Backs Conservative Platform

Adrian Veștea, a 30-year member of Romania's National Liberal Party (PNL) and former designated prime minister, has publicly backed the Liberal-Conservative Platform. This initiative, recently launched by Cluj County Council President Alin Tișe, aims to gather dissatisfied PNL members.

I have been a member of the National Liberal Party for 30 years and, during all this time, I have not been afraid to argue my point of view or a decision on a political or administrative matter, even if it was not to the liking of local or central leaders or did not coincide with their position.

Veștea, who also heads the Brașov County Council, asserted on Facebook that he has never shied away from expressing his views, even when they differed from party leaders. "I have been a member of the National Liberal Party for 30 years and, during all this time, I have not been afraid to argue my point of view or a decision on a political or administrative matter, even if it was not to the liking of local or central leaders or did not coincide with their position," he wrote. He believes many other liberals share this sentiment.

He stressed that while political leaders change, the core values and principles of the PNL, established over 150 years ago, must remain constant. These include freedom of expression, pluralism of opinions, tolerance, and freedom of assembly and association. Veștea urged party members not to fear voicing their opinions, framing it as an act in service of both the PNL and Romania.

Leaders come and go, but the values and principles on which the National Liberal Party has been founded for over 150 years remain the same.

Veștea criticized the lack of internal debate within the party, arguing that a party where only one voice is heard cannot be democratic. "A party that abandons debate and discourages different opinions loses its vitality and its ability to adapt to the challenges of the times," he stated. He recalled that the PNL's status as Romania's sole historic party and one of Europe's oldest stems from its tradition of dialogue and internal consultation.
