Romanian MEP warns AI could eliminate tens of thousands of jobs, advises cash savings

Romanian Member of the European Parliament Gheorghe Piperea has issued a stark warning about the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the country's job market. He estimates that tens of thousands of jobs in Romania's technology and banking industries are at risk of elimination due to AI advancements. Piperea, speaking during an interview, highlighted concerns that AI-driven efficiency could lead to widespread layoffs, particularly within Big Tech and banking sectors. He strongly advocates for human control over such critical decisions, stating that AI should not be solely responsible for determining who gets fired. Piperea argues that relying purely on efficiency criteria could lead to discrimination against vulnerable individuals. Beyond the threat to employment, Piperea also advised Romanian citizens to maintain cash reserves at home. He cited the increasing risk of cyber fraud and the possibility of temporary inaccessibility to bank accounts during emergencies, such as power outages or system failures. He recommended keeping enough cash to cover essential needs for approximately 72 hours, suggesting that holding physical money at home is safer from hackers than digital assets and crucial for urgent situations.
