Romanian pharmacist and accomplice detained over drugs hidden in plush toy sent to U.S.

Romanian prosecutors have detained two women in connection with a drug trafficking case involving an attempt to send illegal substances to the United States. The women, aged 46 and 49, are being investigated for dealing in high-risk and high-addiction drugs.

According to the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), the 49-year-old suspect allegedly tried to mail pills containing cinolazepam to Oregon in November 2025. Cinolazepam is classified as a high-risk drug and is not approved for use in the U.S.

The tablets, hidden inside a plush toy, were previously procured with the support of the co-defendant, aged 46, who, by virtue of her pharmacist profession, had access to such medicines, as well as the possibility of obtaining "justifying" medical prescriptions.

The pills were reportedly hidden inside a plush toy. Prosecutors stated that the 46-year-old suspect, who works as a pharmacist, allegedly provided the drugs and created fake prescriptions to facilitate the scheme. Her profession gave her access to such medications and the ability to obtain seemingly legitimate documentation.

During searches related to the case, authorities discovered and seized 180 cinolazepam tablets, 18 Xanax tablets, and 20 Tramadol tablets along with four Tramadol vials. DIICOT has requested pre-trial detention for both women, submitting their case to the Dolj Tribunal.

Today, the judge of rights and freedoms within the Dolj Tribunal was notified with the proposal for the pre-trial detention of the defendants.
