Romanian Prison Guard Detained for Alleged Cannabis Trafficking

Authorities in Tulcea, Romania, have detained a 23-year-old prison police officer on suspicion of drug trafficking. The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) is leading the investigation into the officer's alleged involvement in the sale of illicit substances.

According to DIICOT prosecutors, the young officer is accused of engaging in criminal activity from October 2023 until August 2026. During this period, he allegedly acquired, possessed, and distributed cannabis within the municipality of Tulcea. Reports indicate that he was selling the drug for approximately 40 lei (about $8.50 USD) per gram.

The investigation culminated on August 23 when the officer was apprehended in the act in the town of Cataloi. DIICOT stated that he was caught "while possessing and transporting approximately 200 grams of cannabis intended for sale." Following his arrest, a search warrant was executed at his residence, where investigators discovered an additional 190 grams of cannabis. Other items, including grinders and paraphernalia showing traces of substances, were also seized as potential evidence related to his alleged criminal enterprise.

The suspect has been detained, and prosecutors have requested a 30-day pre-trial detention order from the Tulcea Tribunal. The investigation is ongoing to uncover the full extent of his alleged criminal activities. The individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty, as per Romanian legal procedures.
