Romanian salt mine conquers international press with cool underground climate

Salina Turda, a spectacular tourist destination in Romania's Cluj County, is capturing international media attention for its unique appeal, particularly as a refuge from extreme global temperatures. The salt mine's blend of industrial heritage, recreational offerings, and a consistently cool underground climate solidifies its status as a major international attraction.

During the summer months, the mine becomes a sought-after oasis of coolness. International journalists have visited to produce photo reports, highlighting the mine's popularity among those seeking to escape the heat. The underground temperature remains stable year-round between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal retreat on scorching days.

Many visitors express their delight with the subterranean coolness. "Wonderful! I could live here at this temperature," one impressed tourist remarked. Another visitor found the experience particularly welcome as their car's air conditioning was not functioning, describing the mine as "a real relief."

Representatives from Salina Turda report that over 70% of recent visitors are international tourists, drawn by both the activities available inside and the mine's distinctive microclimate. The facility is undergoing further development with a 25 million euro expansion project, financed by European funds. This plan includes reopening the Iosif Mine, creating a connecting tunnel to the Terezia Mine, installing panoramic elevators, and modernizing the treatment base.
