Romanian student wins gold at International Chemistry Olympiad

Romania has achieved a remarkable success at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2026) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with student Matei Gabriel Ursachescu from Buzău clinching a gold medal. This outstanding achievement highlights the strength of Romania's science education system.

Alongside Ursachescu's top honor, the Romanian national team brought home a total of four medals. Mihnea Gabriel Alexe and Mihai Stanciu, both students from Bucharest and Arad respectively, earned silver medals. The team's medal haul was completed by Tudor Ștefan Anghel, also from Buzău, who secured a bronze medal.

The students' success is attributed to a period of intensive theoretical and practical preparation, supported by faculty from the University of Bucharest's Chemistry Department. The national team was coordinated by Professor Dr. Daniela Bogdan and Associate Professor Dr. Mihaela Matache. The Ministry of Education and Research congratulated the students and all involved in their preparation, reaffirming its commitment to supporting national teams in international competitions through covering participation fees, travel costs, and organizing preparatory stages.
