Rome to Propose Creating Migrant Hubs in Africa on 'Albania Model'

Italy is preparing to propose the establishment of migrant reception centers in Africa, drawing inspiration from a model recently agreed upon with Albania. This initiative is slated for discussion at the upcoming European Union summit.

The proposed African hubs aim to process asylum claims and manage migration flows outside of EU territory. The strategy mirrors the controversial deal struck with Albania, where migrants intercepted at sea are sent to the country for processing and potential accommodation while their asylum applications are reviewed.

In addition to the migrant hub proposal, Rome also intends to advocate for stricter conditions related to the EU's Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+). This trade program offers preferential tariffs to developing countries that adhere to specific international conventions, including those on human rights and labor. Tightening these rules could put pressure on countries to cooperate more closely on migration control.
