Rommel Pacheco sees Mexican football team capable of winning medal at Los Angeles 2028

Mexico's U-20 national football team has secured a spot in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, rekindling hopes for an Olympic medal after failing to qualify for Paris 2024. The team's qualification came after winning the Concacaf U-20 Championship.

Rommel Pacheco, the Director General of Mexico's National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE), celebrated the achievement. He emphasized that with the current generation of talented footballers and the opportunities presented by the new competition format, Mexico has a strong chance to achieve a historic result on U.S. soil. "We have a great possibility in football to achieve a medal in Los Angeles 2028. We are in constant communication with the Mexican Football Federation for talent detection," Pacheco stated.

Pacheco, who has consistently aimed to build a historic cycle for Mexican sports and maximize medal counts in the Olympics, also reflected on the national delegation's performance at the Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games. Mexico dominated the medal standings, securing over 400 medals, an unprecedented achievement that Pacheco attributes to sustained, meticulous work with athletes and their support teams.

"It left a good taste in my mouth. We surpassed the medal count from the previous edition and reached 400, something that had never happened before. It is the result of meticulous work carried out over two years, hand-in-hand with the athletes and attending to their needs. The athletes are the most important thing; our job is to give them all possible support," he concluded. The focus now shifts to supporting these athletes as they prepare for future international competitions, including the upcoming Olympic Games.
