Roy Suryo hearing postponed after judge is affected by Anak Krakatau eruption

The hearing in Roy Suryo’s pretrial compensation application has been postponed because the judge could not fly back to Jakarta after the Anak Krakatau eruption disrupted flights.

I Ketut Darpawan, the sole judge at the South Jakarta District Court, was unable to return as scheduled after all flights were canceled from the previous morning. Court spokesperson Halida Rahardhini said the judge was traveling by land and sea instead.

She also asked for prayers for the judge’s journey and said he had chosen the overland and sea route to resume the hearings under his responsibility.

Roy Suryo filed the pretrial application again after Darpawan previously declared that his request could not be accepted. Under the applicable rules, an application concerning the same pretrial object may be submitted again after such a ruling.

In the earlier decision, the judge said the finance minister was the authorized official for compensation payments, but Suryo had not included the minister as a related party. “Because the finance minister was not included as a party, the application contains a formal defect because it lacks a party,” the judge said. He concluded that the application should therefore be declared inadmissible.
