Royal visit marks France milestone

Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand have arrived in Paris for a significant five-day state visit to France, a trip that underscores 170 years of enduring diplomatic relations between the two nations. This occasion marks a rare royal milestone, being only the third official state visit to France by a reigning Thai monarch.

The visit, extended at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, also commemorates 340 years since the Kingdom of Siam first established contact with France. It highlights centuries of political, cultural, and economic connections. Upon arrival at Paris-Orly Airport, Their Majesties were greeted by French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and other senior officials, as well as Thailand's ambassador to France. Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, who has strong ties to France's fashion and cultural scenes, also boarded the royal aircraft to welcome them.

Following an official reception and military honor guard, the King and Queen took up residence at Le Meurice Paris, their official accommodation provided by the French government. The state visit celebrates the 170th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations, initiated in 1856 with the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation. This historical context builds upon previous state visits by Thai monarchs, including King Chulalongkorn in 1897 and His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother in 1960, both of which significantly strengthened bilateral ties.

Beyond the ceremonial aspects, the current visit is poised to explore new avenues for cooperation. Key areas of focus include culture, innovation, sustainable urban development, and the aerospace industry. The trip signifies a continued evolution of Thai-French relations, moving from their foundational diplomatic origins to encompass contemporary collaborative opportunities.
