Rubio: Cuba Helped Forge Extreme Left in U.S. and West, Citing 'Poisonous Resentment'

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that Cuba played a role in shaping the extreme left within the United States and across the hemisphere. Speaking at the Ministerial Meeting on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism in Washington, Rubio asserted that "the Cuban regime's vast intelligence and ideological network helped forge the extreme left in our country and in our hemisphere, and remains inextricably linked to extreme left-wing groups and movements throughout the West and beyond its borders." The meeting, involving 60 nations, focused on what the Trump administration identifies as a global resurgence of "extreme left-wing political terrorism." Rubio characterized this form of terrorism as a "real and transnational threat that has existed for decades, but which is now experiencing a resurgence." He reviewed historical violent episodes, arguing that "left-wing violence was not only justified; it was treated as sacrosanct, a protected category in itself." Rubio elaborated that these groups, regardless of their specific labels like anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, communist, anarchist, or Marxist, share a fundamental nature rooted in "poisonous resentment, disguised in the language of equality." He specifically criticized communism, stating, "One of the criticisms that are sometimes heard about communism, for example, is that it sounds good in theory but never works in practice. In reality, that is not true. Communism does not even sound good in theory." According to the State Department, extreme left-wing anti-government terrorism is currently responsible for more attacks and plots in the United States than any other ideological category, accounting for 63% of all recorded anti-government attacks or plots and three of the four anti-government fatalities in 2025.
