Rubio, Miliband discuss Ukraine war, Europe taking greater role in its own security

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband convened in Washington to address critical global security issues, emphasizing the need for Europe to assume a greater responsibility for its own defense. The meeting, confirmed by the State Department, highlighted the intertwined nature of European and transatlantic security.

A primary focus of the discussion was the escalating conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's urgent appeals for additional air defense missiles, in response to intensified Russian ballistic missile strikes, were a key point of discussion. Miliband was expected to stress that Ukraine's security is inseparable from broader European and global stability, reiterating the United Kingdom's steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine for the long term.

Beyond the immediate crisis in Ukraine, the two leaders also reaffirmed their shared dedication to ensuring safe maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz. This commitment is crucial for global trade and energy security. Furthermore, they underscored their mutual goal of preventing Iran from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons, a long-standing international concern.

In separate remarks prior to the meeting, Miliband highlighted the importance of reopening Gulf waterways to alleviate Britain's cost of living crisis. He also indicated his intention to raise the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza during his discussions. This visit marked Miliband's second meeting with Rubio, following an initial introduction at the ASEAN meeting in Manila.
