Rubio: US in indirect talks with Iran via Oman to secure Hormuz Strait

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Tuesday that commercial vessels are still navigating the Strait of Hormuz. He revealed that Washington is involved in indirect negotiations with Tehran, facilitated by Oman, to guarantee the safety of maritime traffic in the short term.

"There is a dialogue process between Oman and Iran, in which we participate, to determine how to ensure more vessels transit safely as we move toward broader talks on denuclearization," Rubio stated during a meeting in Washington with Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano. The U.S. top diplomat asserted that the waterway "remains open" and that talks are progressing, though he specified no definitive agreement has been reached yet, according to Efe.

On the same day, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that both nations might finalize an imminent pact within hours to restore commercial navigation in Hormuz. These diplomatic efforts follow President Donald Trump's decision over the weekend to suspend a large-scale military strike against Iran to allow space for negotiation. Although Tehran publicly denied the formal start of talks on Monday, Trump labeled the Iranian government "hypocritical" and warned this represents the "last chance" to reach an agreement.

According to the U.S. president, the roadmap includes a first stage focused on reopening the strait and a second stage aimed at denuclearization, intending to end the armed conflict initiated by the United States and Israel on February 28. The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz intensified after Tehran blocked this strategic passage following the rupture of a memorandum of understanding signed in June, a measure met by the White House with the deployment of a naval blockade off the Iranian coast.
