Ruiselede opens new residential and care complex with sports hall and community restaurant

Ruiselede’s new Sint-Jozef site is designed to look less like a traditional care home and more like a shared village space. Alongside accommodation for older people, the complex has a sports hall, community restaurant, fitness room, village shop and hair salon.

The site includes 37 residential care rooms, 27 assisted-living apartments and rooms for short-term stays. Residents can watch activities in the sports hall from the cafeteria, including children arriving for school activities and local people coming to use the facilities.

Dirk Lips of care organization Curando said the aim was to create a place where older people would want to live. “We want to be a place where older people enjoy living,” he said. Curando brought several forms of housing and care together in one location.

The partnership also involves De Kiem primary school and the municipality of Ruiselede. School pupils will use the sports hall for physical education, while sports clubs will use it in the evenings. The site was officially opened on Wednesday evening by the municipal authorities and Curando staff.

The project will continue after residents move from the old care home next week. A new building for small-scale living is planned in a later phase. The old Sint-Jozef care home will then disappear, making way for a new car park. Full completion is planned for 2028.
