Ruling party demands swift disciplinary action against lawmaker over Gwangju Uprising remarks

South Korea's political landscape is charged as the ruling People Power Party (PPP) pushes for immediate disciplinary action against lawmaker Lee Jin-sook. The controversy centers on allegations that Lee shared content distorting the 1980 Gwangju Uprising and promoting coup sentiments. The PPP has expressed strong condemnation, with party spokesperson Kim Sung-hoe stating that Lee's actions, including sharing a video that described the Gwangju Uprising as a 'riot,' are unacceptable.

Kim further criticized Lee for sharing a video from a far-right YouTuber that allegedly suggested a coup against the current administration and made provocative remarks about Lee's potential impeachment. "We cannot help but be astonished by the actions of lawmaker Lee Jin-sook, who defames the democratic history of the Republic of Korea and even shares coup-inciting videos," Kim stated in a written briefing.

The main opposition Democratic Party has echoed these sentiments, vowing to pursue disciplinary proceedings against Lee as soon as the National Assembly's ethics committee is established. This committee's formation is a prerequisite for initiating a formal review of Lee's conduct. The controversy escalated after Lee held a forum aimed at re-examining the Gwangju Uprising, a pivotal event in South Korea's modern democratic history.

While the National Assembly passed a resolution calling for Lee's expulsion, it lacks legal binding power. Actual expulsion requires a deliberation and vote by the ethics committee, followed by approval from at least two-thirds of the National Assembly members. The PPP has pledged to hold Lee accountable for actions they deem a negation of South Korea's democratic history.
