Russell beats Hamilton to Barcelona pole

He edged out his Ferrari-driving teammate Lewis Hamilton by a mere 0.064 seconds in a thrilling qualifying session. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli could only manage third place in the other Mercedes, while McLaren's Lando Norris secured fourth, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Russell, who had failed to score points in the previous two Grands Prix, expressed his delight at finding his rhythm again. "It's nice to feel the groove again," he stated. He had fallen significantly behind Antonelli in the standings after a difficult race in Monaco, which was marred by an unjust penalty for speeding in the pit lane. However, Russell has shown dominant form throughout the weekend in Spain.

Lewis Hamilton came incredibly close to snatching pole, with Ferrari's upgrades for this race proving effective, enabling him to secure his first front-row start since the 2024 British Grand Prix. Hamilton had been on the back foot all weekend, having missed the first practice session to allow development driver Dino Beganovic an opportunity. "I was easily 0.4-0.5secs off in final practice," he admitted. "I was thinking: 'Where am I going to get that pace?'"

Despite missing out on pole, Hamilton felt positive about the race ahead. "These guys did an amazing job to get up there, we thought the fight was with ourselves and McLaren and Lewis was very fast in that session," Russell commented on the close competition. Hamilton added, "we're in a good position to fight for tomorrow so we have a race."
