Russia calls NATO’s Arctic mission a direct security threat

Russia has described NATO’s expanding Arctic activity as a direct threat, warning that military incidents in the far north could spiral into armed confrontation.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the assessment in an article published Monday by Russia’s Foreign Ministry. He said NATO’s activities were aggressive and argued that the risk of incidents with potentially catastrophic consequences was rising.

NATO launched Arctic Sentry in February to strengthen security and the alliance’s presence in the region. The mission extends beyond Greenland and coordinates military activity across the Arctic with U.S. backing. Denmark is contributing F-35 fighter jets.
