Russia Claims Downing Over 600 Ukrainian Drones in Overnight Attacks

Russia's air defense systems intercepted a massive wave of 660 Ukrainian drones overnight, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Defense in Moscow. This reported number represents one of the highest tallies since the conflict began, with drones being destroyed across more than a dozen regions.

The aerial assault extended to the Moscow region, as well as the annexed Crimean peninsula and the Black Sea. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that at least 47 drones heading toward the capital were intercepted. Emergency services were deployed to areas where debris fell, though no casualties or significant damage were immediately reported. The Tula region, south of Moscow, also experienced a "massive" drone attack, with Governor Dmitry Milyaev confirming damage to a private home and a reported injury to a woman.

These strikes are part of Ukraine's escalating campaign of long-range drone attacks against Russia in recent months. The primary targets have been energy infrastructure, aiming to disrupt the Kremlin's revenue streams crucial for funding its ongoing war effort. Last week, a Ukrainian attack reportedly caused a fire at an oil refinery southeast of Moscow. Explosions were also reported in Crimea, near the Kerch Strait Bridge, which connects the peninsula to mainland Russia, causing its temporary closure. Ukrainian attacks on Crimean infrastructure have reportedly created significant logistical challenges for Moscow's forces.
