Russia Day: Ambassador highlights history, sovereignty, and partnership with Kuwait

Russia marked its national holiday, Russia Day, on June 12, a date commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic 36 years ago.

In an address, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Kuwait, H.E. Mr. Vladimir Zheltov, reflected on Russia's extensive history, tracing its lineage from Ancient Rus' to the Soviet Union. He described Russia as a vast civilization spanning thousands of kilometers, possessing unique traditions and cultural heritage. Zheltov noted that throughout its history, Russia has faced numerous challenges, including invasions by various foreign powers, yet has consistently endured and contributed to the liberation of other nations.

Ambassador Zheltov asserted that in the current geopolitical climate, Russia continues to oppose Western policies aimed at global hegemony and isolation. He stated that Russia, alongside like-minded partners, advocates for a just, multipolar world order founded on equality, mutual respect, and international law, rejecting dictates and double standards. He specifically mentioned that the concept of a "rules-based international order," promoted by the West, does not align with the interests of the Global South.

Turning to relations with Kuwait, the ambassador highlighted the 63rd anniversary of diplomatic ties, describing them as strong and time-tested. He noted Kuwait's historical significance as the first Arab Gulf state to establish relations with the Soviet Union in 1963, with earlier contacts dating back to the early 20th century. Zheltov praised Kuwait's leadership for pursuing wise and consistent policies, maintaining balanced relations with international partners, which has ensured the resilience of bilateral ties. He also acknowledged Kuwait's appreciation for Russia's political and diplomatic stance during the 1990-1991 Iraqi aggression against Kuwait.
