Russia launches another major attack on Ukraine, striking Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih and a civilian ship in the Black Sea

Russia launched another large-scale attack on Ukraine overnight, using drones and ballistic missiles against Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih and civilian maritime infrastructure in the Black Sea.

In Kyiv, explosions and fragments from intercepted projectiles caused fires in the Desnianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi and Solomianskyi districts. Missile fragments struck an 18-storey apartment block in Shevchenkivskyi, setting fire to the seventh and eighth floors. Emergency crews also battled a blaze at a roughly 150-square-metre warehouse in Desnianskyi, along with fires involving several cars and a truck in a parking area.

An abandoned four-storey building in Shevchenkivskyi caught fire, while an administrative building in Solomianskyi was damaged and also began burning. Authorities initially reported no casualties in Kyiv, but police later said that three people, a woman and two men, were injured in Solomianskyi and received medical treatment. Office buildings, warehouses and several vehicles were also damaged.

The attack also hit Kryvyi Rih, the home city of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Oleksandr Hanжа, head of the regional military administration, said a shopping centre was struck and a major fire followed. Authorities were still checking whether anyone had been injured.

The previous evening, Russian forces attacked a Palau-flagged commercial vessel twice with drones after it left a port in Ukraine’s Odesa region. Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Mykola Kalashnyk said the ship carried about 2,800 tonnes of corn bound for Greece. The strikes caused a major fire on board. Border guards evacuated seven sailors and the Ukrainian pilot assisting the vessel, taking them to safety for medical observation. Two other crew members remained missing after the first explosion threw them into the water. Search and rescue operations continued. Kalashnyk condemned the attack as a deliberate strike on civilian infrastructure and international maritime transport, warning of potential consequences for global food security.
