Russia launches large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine; Kyiv hit hard

Russia unleashed a significant combined assault on Ukraine, deploying 611 long-range attack drones and missiles. Ukraine's air defense forces demonstrated considerable effectiveness, managing to shoot down or divert 582 of the drones using electronic warfare measures. However, the defense against ballistic and cruise missiles proved more challenging.

Out of 34 ballistic missiles, primarily from S-300/400 systems, Ukrainian forces intercepted 15. The defense against cruise missiles was more successful, with all 30 launched missiles being neutralized. Russia also deployed six Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missiles, five of which were reportedly intercepted by Ukrainian defenses. These missiles appear to be used to temporarily fill the role of aeroballistic missiles.

The capital city, Kyiv, was a primary target, with 60 out of 70 missiles striking the city. The attacks also hit UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Pechersk Lavra, a film studio, museums in Kyiv and Kharkiv, and a cultural site in Dnipro. In Kharkiv, a second strike occurred while firefighters were extinguishing a blaze from an earlier attack, resulting in the deaths of five officials. A military airfield in Kropyvnytskyi was also targeted. Military analysts suggest that such combined strikes may continue in the coming days.

In parallel, Ukrainian forces conducted strikes behind Russian lines. Targets included the "Kavkaz" port in the Krasnodar region, which houses a large oil product storage facility. Bridges in the Crimean isthmus, specifically the Chongar and Henichesk bridges, were successfully attacked again. Explosions were also reported near Simferopol in Crimea, and in Moscow and Tula regions, though the results of these strikes are unconfirmed. In the Sumy region, Ukrainian forces attacked a drone operator school in Bolshiye Ugoni, reportedly destroying a warehouse and vehicles, with casualties being assessed.
