Russia Launches Massive Missile and Drone Attack on Kyiv; At Least One Dead, Over 20 Injured

Russia launched a massive mixed attack of missiles and drones on Kyiv overnight Sunday, striking residential buildings and other structures in the Ukrainian capital. At least one person died and 24 were injured, with seven hospitalized in Kyiv. Fragments of projectiles damaged buildings in several districts, including residential areas, a business center, a supermarket, and a dormitory.

Kyiv Independent reported that over 50 Russian missiles and nearly 700 drones targeted the capital, marking one of the most intense attacks this year. Air raid alerts were issued across the country around midnight, as Ukrainian Air Forces reported dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones heading toward the capital. Warnings were also issued about a potential launch of a medium-range ballistic missile by Russia.

Ukrainian authorities reported damage in multiple Kyiv districts. Residential buildings, a business center, a supermarket, a dormitory, garages, and warehouses were hit. At least one person died and 24 were injured, seven of whom were hospitalized in Kyiv. Three more people were injured in the region surrounding the capital. Authorities also noted people were trapped in an air-raid shelter in the Shevchenkivskyi district.

This attack follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statement on Saturday that Ukrainian intelligence, alongside U.S. and European partners, had detected signs of Russia preparing a combined attack on Ukrainian territory, including Kyiv. Zelenskyy mentioned receiving data about Russian preparations for an attack using the "Orešnik" missile.
